Born to a family of migrant farmworkers in Delano, California, Valdez experienced the brutal reality that he was not welcome in his own country. He became determined to fight for a better, more inclusive world.
When he learned of Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez’s fight for union rights, he immediately joined their efforts and became a picketing captain for the United Farm Workers.
